1.3 – Vectors and scalars

Topic 1.3 Notes

1.3.1 Vector and Scalar Quantities
This question tests the concept of vector and scalar quantities.
A vector is a quantity which has magnitude and direction.
A scalar is a quantity which only has magnitude but no direction.
1.3.2 Vector Combination
This question try to test the concept of vector combination.
There are two kind of combinations. One is to add two vectors, for example, let do a + b
1 Draw them so they start at a common point O.

2 Complete the parallelogram whose sides are a and b.
3 Draw the diagonal of this parallelogram starting at O.
The other is to subtract two vectors: a – bx
1 reverse b first.
2 then do a+(-b) follow the steps  of vector addition
1.3.3 Vector Components
This question try to test the concept of the components of vector.
Like the example vector A. Every vector can be separated to x, y or z components.
One of the advantage use vector components is when add + and subtract –
Vector can simply add and subtract their Components.
